They use the same line art, are different part numbers, both looking NLA or huge $$$.

yes, they should both be side loaders. I currently run a diff from a 1980 635 in my e12. The side loaders and rear loaders as found on the later e24/e28s are not interchangeable with the e12.

How do you get at the top two bolts on the right side for a diff with the fluid canister on the right? This thing is practically ready to fall out.

Hope this helps. I'm not as experienced as others, Mike W., to know of a canister. Mine has a drain plug and a side filler plug, unless you are referring to the fuel pump and filter.
