yes, they should both be side loaders. I currently run a diff from a 1980 635 in my e12. The side loaders and rear loaders as found on the later e24/e28s are not interchangeable with the e12.

Hope this helps. I'm not as experienced as others, Mike W., to know of a canister. Mine has a drain plug and a side filler plug, unless you are referring to the fuel pump and filter.
