E12/early E24 suspension similarities/differences

Post by twastheglow »

I know the early E24's shared basically the same suspension as the E12. I'm curious as to what (if any) parts aren't interchangeable.

My father has an early euro E24 and we are both wondering what parts are/aren't shared.

Also, we're looking for lowering springs and a set of Bilstein Sports for his car. The Bilsteins we can find pretty easily, but nothing in the way of springs. Can E12 springs simply be used? I noticed on realoem that the front spring part numbers are indeed different (didn't check the rear). Just trying to get a feel for our options. Thanks.

You can get H&R springs for the e12. The H&R part number is: 29533. I think it is a 40mm drop. Just do a search on google for "H&R 29533" and there are several places to buy(ebay, amazon etc.).

So then are you implying the E12 springs will work without issue on an E12 based E24? The only reason I'm questioning it is due to there being different part numbers between chassis'. Thanks.

Yes they will work fine on an e12 based 6er. The 6er is slightly heavier (~100lbs) so it may sit slightly lower, but the differnce would be negligible.

Great information, thank you. That's what I was looking for.

Is there anything suspension wise that doesn't cross between chassis'?

I took the entire suspension from an '80 euro 635 and installed it in an '81 528i. Springs, Bilstein struts/shocks, f&r sway bars, LSD. I think everything is transferable.

Thanks, Tom.

Clearly the suspension as a whole bolts up (as you just verified)...I would assume individual pieces would bolt up independently as well.

Go back to last summer's posts for my E12, E24 front strut adventures in more detail. The only difference I found was the axles, requiring different bearings. Nothing to fear, the difference is very (no fit) obvious. The hubs are the same.
