driveshaft issue?

Post by neetyrom »

Everytime im at a low gear like first or second under high (rpm 3-4500rpm) i can feel my car underneath me vibrating. What should I do to solve this, should i just get a new driveshaft or is it another problem?
thanks

You might only need a new Guibo?
The rubber donut between the driveshaft & the tranny.
Being rubber they do wear out.
There's a procedure to replace it.
Good luck,,,,Greg

as far as the guibo goes everything looks to be intact and relatively in good shape, do you think it could be a bearing or something else along the driveshaft? could it be a cv joint thats doing this? just want o make sure before i screw something up

It can't be a CV joint because it doesn't have one. It might be a U joint or the center bearing. BMW U joints tend to get stiff for a long time before they get loose, and do cause vibration, although usually staring out in first or second. Eventually you can feel it at speed too, but that takes a while. Complicating things BMW U joints are nominally not replaceable. It's very much a specialty job and very few places will even touch them.

well i looked into it and a couple of the guys on the forum says they have done it w/ the ehlp of the haynes manual. the only question i have is balancing the drive shaft because this might as well be the only problem i am having.

I've read that BEFORE you remove the driveshaft, you MUST mark one part to the other.
I'm guessing a bright colored crayon would work from the 99 cent store?
If you don't, when you reinstall, everything will be outta balance & still shimmy.

Not to suggest this but, I got lucky & only replaced my Guibo because it was obviously worn.

It's a good idea to replace the center bearing & guibo at the same time?

There's only one way to install a new guibo correctly!
Ask here if you need to!! This is VERY VERY important!
Did you rotate & inspect your guibo with a flashlight?
Good luck,,,,Greg
