any opinion/advice will help at this point

Post by neetyrom »

thought about leveling my drive shaft, and replacing my guibo, and when i inspected my car prior the replacement I noticed that before i even begin i have a problem. The exhaust manifold flange that connects from the exhaust manifold down to the catalytic converter is bolted with 3 bolts. 1 out of the three is missing a head and their is no possible way for me to extract the bolt with out a head on the bolt. The bolt itself is relatively hard to get access to in the first place, but without a head this is basically mission impossible 8.
Pondered many ideas, but i have come up with a big fat zero. Thought about drilling through the bolt itself, but i can barely get a good position for it.
Thought about taking the exhaust manifold out completely but the flange connecting to the cats. prevents me from taking it out of the car to fix.
Any advice will help.

FWIW, it's a stud and a nut, so if it's broken off at the edge of the downpipe flange you might be able to get a vice grips on there, but not likely. Probably just going to have to drop the exhaust and pull the manifolds to get it.

You can grind it off. A dremel may work since getting a grinder to reach will be a challenge. It may take some patience but it should work.

The manifold needs to come off.

Get some Kroil and let it soak a while. Hope you can leave it to work for at least a day.

Don't cut the stud off! You will need it to attach a set of vise grips.

Worst case, if you aren't tool handy, take it to you local engine machine shop to be drilled out.
