Lumpy idle solved!

Post by RonDwyer »

Waaaay too many things contributed here.

Vacuum leaks only went so far.
FPR Vacuum line had a blockage in it, sucks now.
Note to self: blow through used hoses from now on.
Old rubber line to the vapor purge valve was cracked under the manifold.
Cap & rotor were roached. Date stamped 1999.

Still not smooth!
Pulled fuel rail.
Every single injector sprayed a pencil stream of gas.
Cleaning injectors is easy. I did it using the rail and left the FPR in place, just not on the engine. Bolted it to my drill press and ran 20 feet of lines to the feed from the fuel pump, and connected the return from FPR.
Got a push button and a injector plug and rigged up a device.
It turns on the pump, splice it to the green/violet line and fires the injector continuously. I'll try to post a picture.
Marshall at 002 said it sounds like a recipe for a fire! I was careful. No different than filling the chain saw.
Fill the hose with techron.
Spray into a glass and watch the stream clean up after alternating among all the injectors.

Then when I put it all back on with new seals, it had a new issue at just under 2,000 RPM.

Checked valve adjust.
Bought new wires. Nothing else to feed it now! Arrrrggghh!

On a lark, I grabbed my 24" screwdriver and used it like a stethoscope and discovered #5 injector was as dead as can be. The injector rotated away and the plug for it didn't make proper contact.

Registration appointment on the 31st and a smog referee visit.
I actually got a check engine light circuit working.
Not sure where to put it, thinking the seat belt indicator on the dashboard.

Anyone else faced the issue of a check engine light at the smog station?

It's been 5 years off the road, can't wait to drive it again.
