Gas Tank Problem 530i 1976

Post by Spoiler »

Hi All,
I am new to the form. I looked around but really didn't information about my problem. When at the gas station and I pump gas into the tank the nozzle keeps shutting off. I can pump in a few gallons at a time but that's about it. I have to pump it in little bit at a time.

A little history. I had a bad smell of gas in the car. I had a garage look at it and they said a O ring was bad and they replaced it. I am not sure if they pulled something apart or if the repair is not related to this problem.

Anyone have an idea as to why this is happening? I am think a breather value in the tank is blocked. If that's the case I don't know how to fix it. Anyone have instruction for that repair?

They likely replaced the O ring for the pickup/sending unit, it's actually below the fuel level with a full tank so can leak and really create an odor if it's bad. If that's all they did it would not affect your gas pumping issue.

Thanks The smell was really bad. You are most likely right. I will have to do more research.

I also had the occasional gassy trunk which I avoided by not filling all the way, seemed to be solved with new fuel line, one of which had turned to mush at the tank connection. Still suspected the evap lines/ tank. I've looked behind the side partition in the trunk but had no success accessing. Does the tank have to be dropped to get there?

I think it does but I am not sure. I will have to look in the trunk to see if I have access that way.

Spoiler has an early car, which I'm not that familiar with, but 77+ do not require dropping the tank to do the evap lines. Slightly lowering, but not dropping. Still a miserable job with crap falling in your eyes, but not technically difficult.
