I've scoured the forum and can't find a lead on this: what is a compatible ATF for a 1977 530i? Dextron is forbidden I understand...is there a safe alternative? Thanks in advance.

On the contrary, Dexron is the spec'd fluid and will do quite nicely. Unlike many newer cars it doesn't need any expensive magic juice, just the cheap stuff from Walmart will do quite well.
