From your description, could it be a temperature/humidity/moisture issue? Plug wires?

Also, I've noticed on the older afms, the contact tracks get worn causing , but if you open them up to fix, you may wind up with condensation/moisture issues later. I've had similar issues.

Time to break out the hair dryer on one of those rough running mornings and see if you can dry out the suspect part?
