5-Speed swap parts
Hey there,
With the guidance of Mike I have collected a list of parts for the 5-speed transmission swap I am planning to do also with the m30b35. I will list what I have here:
-getrag 265-6 (around 140k)
-cross member
-drive shaft from an e24
-clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing from TCD
I am looking for a speedometer cable (what cars had the hp22 automatic transmission?),
I've also been looking at short shift kits from bav auto but not sure which one would fit and if I would need anything else. If I were to assemble a short shift kit myself, what would I need for it?
Also the crossmember mounts, and the transmission mounts. I've found these transmission mounts from an 82 e24, this is the part #, 23 71 1 175 732.
The last thing I am confused about is the shifter support. I am not sure if I need to switch the one in my e12. If I do from what car can I find it from. Mike also informed me that the shifter support has 2 mounts on the tranny, and 1 on the body that I will need to fab.
Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it. I am spending the winter gathering a parts list so I can have everything ready for the spring!

Pedal set, clutch hydraulics.
The underdash panel is different. You can modify yours or find one from a manual.
Instrument cluster if you don't want the PRND21 indicators.

Sorry if I missed this, but the parts list differs if you are converting from an automatic or a 4-speed.
There are a few short shift kits out there that I researched, but in the end, I just shortened mine and am perfectly happy with it.
I was not interested in a radical reduction, so only lengthened the lower portion of the shifter. If I had wanted yet a shorter travel, I would have shortened the top portion also. That is always relatively simple to do later.

In my opinion, the rest of the stock shift linkage works great if rebuilt.
Oh, and I added a bracket to support the back of the underbody shift plate.

Regarding the rear mounting point that attaches to the chassis, I received some advice when investigating short shift kits:
One additional problem to consider with this particular car is how to anchor the kit to the transmission. What the factory does is connect the shift bracket where the linkage goes to both the transmission and to the body of the car. This means that the bracket is suspended between two independently moving objects which in my opinion is a undesirable if precision and repeatability is in mind. On most e12, e24 and e28 with the close ratio 5 speed I have offered a triangulating bracket that relocates the rear connection point from the body of the car back to the transmission thus anchoring the whole linkage to only one moving body. It is a simple bracket and you can do it yourself for a few dollars or I can do it for $125 which pays for the parts and the fabrication time.

Yep, I got the same advice and thought about making such a bracket. But I went with the body mount (which actually has a rubber isolator, so is not rigid) and the whole thing works great. I really can't imagine needing anything more accurate, as it is solid as is. Granted, I have not tried their kit.bizz wrote:Regarding the rear mounting point that attaches to the chassis, I received some advice when investigating short shift kits:

Please excuse my inexperience but is this regarding the shifter support/shift linkage? Blaise, is the mount you made connecting to the body with a rubber isolator shown in the picture?
Also in terms of shift rods I do not have access to a mig/tig weld (yet) and would rather just buy a kit. Would a kit from a 2002 work?
Thanks

Yes, I kept the rubber isolator.maxmadill76530i wrote: Blaise, is the mount you made connecting to the body with a rubber isolator shown in the picture?

I doubt a 2002 kit would work, but maybe just the shifter could be used. It really depends on how much of the stock BMW parts they are using in the kit.

Hey, so I emailed autosolutions about using their 5 speed short shift kit and they indicated that the selector rod for their kit (designed for the 4 speed) is too long in application with the getrag 265 linkage. Blaise, what selector rod did you use to build your linkage?
Again, if it's a factor of just buying a kit that works for a 5 speed car that would be awesome as I can get all of the correct bushings and clips.
