Dash restoration options for early dash

With a badly cracked dash in an early car ('75-6), what are people doing besides throwing a mat over it? I've seen leather and alcantara re-covers, but in most cases those are done on a dash that isn't in bad condition, since cracks usually show through because the surface isn't flat like it should be. How about some crazy ideas like filling and sanding flat, then using a coating similar to a bed liner? A kind of flocking? Something with a slight texture and able to fill imperfections. Anyone try anything unconventional with success?

Believe it or not but early dashes are generally easier to find in nice shape. Not sure why that is. Just Dashes in Santa Ana apparently wants $2k to redo one now.

Thanks. There just aren't many early dashes that come up for sale so I wanted options with this one. I'm going to ask a local guy who does leather and vinyl on e28s for a quote.
