Need help - Steering column boot replacement

Post by profsr »

Has anyone ever replaced a steering column boot? This fits in the firewall. Wondering if this is easy enough to do.

Item #2 on the page:

Thanks for your help

Yes. If I recall, you have to pull the steering column out to slide the new boot on. I think it is a little tricky to get it seated in the firewall due to the angle. It might be possible to seat the boot before angling the steering column back into its final position. I think you can leave the steering wheel on.

I also remember it squeaking when I turned the steering column, as the new rubber rubbed on the the steel rod. That was embarrassing. I think a little silicon grease solved that problem. Sorry if this is vague, it has been a while since I did this.

I did this when I swapped the pedal box from an auto to manual, see the pics in my Getrag conversion post in the gallery. I reused the same rubber as it was okay. It is just held in to the groove in the pedal box, very easy to replace once you've removed the steering column.
