YAY! Good progress! :D
Maybe someone will chime in that can help you. I know I can't!
Good luck,,,,Greg
Ps,,Is it possible to tighten the sprocket just enough for the bolts to hold it in place so you can line it up by
tapping it in place? This may sound dumb, but, it's all I got ...

Oil drained but then a small complication . So because I can't lift the engine I couldn't remove the oil pan since it's the entire bottom of the engine. However, with the oil removed I was able to go fishing through the timing section much easier since I could now hear what I was feeling around, and ...

Matthew & Mike
Could the sprocket bolt holes be in a rectangular situation?
If so, would Matthew have to rotate it for them to line up?
Also, could Matthew get lucky & the bolt be in the oil pan?
I guess there's a lot in the way, huh?
Or, if he removes the lower timing chain cover ...

Sorry for your issue! Has it become obvious that the sprocket is not the correct one?
Did you line it up against the old one?
Good luck,,,,Greg

It is the old sprocket for the timing chain.

As for the missing bolt I'm going to have to drain the oil and go in though the bottom to try and find it ...

You do have the tensioner piston removed, correct? You may have to move the cam or crank just a touch to get things to line up, but it shouldn't be much. Keep the dowel in mind too.

Tensioner spring is out and the dowel lines up with its hole, but the sprocket seems to not line up properly once I ...

So I'm not dead, but I'm certainly not in a great mood right now.

I'm finally getting Sam put back together and more trouble arises. I've got the head reassembled, and mounted properly but it seems I just can't win as the sprocket for the timing chain doesn't want to reattach. I can get 1 bolt in ...

I know you said the oil was like mud, but, a picture is worth a thousand words!!
WOW!
The previous owner didn't care at all about this E12!! :x
You just may need to do the bottom end too. It's really bad! :(

Sadly I can't afford to the the bottom end unless I have to do the bottom end at the ...

Don't worry, I didn't die or fall off the planet. I've just been busy lately.

Progress was slow for a bit because of weather and waiting for my valve spring compressor to come in. I appreciate the tip on removing the cam shaft, much easier than doing it the way the book laid it out. I think they ...

Progress has been stalled lately, namely due to the weather, but partially due to the nut that won't come off the front of the cylinder head.

What nut on the front of the head? There's 8 bolts but no nuts but they're only 6MM. You aren't talking about the nut on the front of the cam are you ...

Maybe NAPA? Sears? Sears has the lifetime guarantee!! No questions asked!
As long it the tool is Craftsman!
The truck that sells tools to mechanics has it, but, it's a lil too pricey.
Good luck,,,,Greg

I was actually thinking of type. There are some variations on design so I was wondering more ...

In other news I'm shopping about for a Valve Spring Compression Tool. Any recommendations?

The piano top pistons are the ones mostly desired! I hope you got lucky!
You may not need new rings? These bottom ends are nearly bullet proof!
Some of us know of injector rebuilders!! Just ask.
Greg

I hope so on the pistons too. I haven't had a chance to check the rings yet so I don't know how ...

Don't even think of putting that thing back on without replacing the valve guide seals. Dollars to doughnuts they're crispy hard and leaking like a sieve. Check the head for cracks carefully too, but at first glance it appears to be ok, but a small crack could be starting.

I'm taking the valves ...

Delays due to breaking one of my ratchets occurred, but I got back on track and bring pictures!

First is the head gasket (warping/twisting occurred when separating it from the engine block where it was practically glued on place):

You said 'the book' says 15/40 is recommended. That's, of course for a new motor.
I don't think yours or mine is new anymore. 20/50 is what you fight for.
Please read my last post in the other thread.

When you look in the owner's manual the oil is not determined by the age of the engine ...
