BBS RS help

Post by crazyfastman »

I'm building a set of BBS RS rims with my tax return in a few weeks. The set I have consists of the standard 2 RS005s (16x7 ET11) and 2 RS006s (16x8 ET 24).

I'm going to take the two RS005s and widen the inner barrels as much as I can (they are cracked and need to be replaced anyway) and put them in the back. So, I've been trying to figure out if I can go as wide as 16x9. If I did my math right, that would take the offset to +36 and require (I think) 7.5" barrels. Then I could put the RS006s up front to make 16x8" front (225/45/16 tires) and 16x9" rear (245/50/16? tires).

Can anyone here let me know if they have installed wheels with this much offset (around 6.5" of back-spacing) in an e12. If so, how did they fit? Did you have to notch the trailing arms? any rubbing issues?

That tire size is too tall. You want a 245/45/16. That is the problem. There aren't many of those left, so to me it seems like a lot of work for no gain, as once the one or two 245/45s left are gone, what will you do?

I think your fronts will be close or work perfectly. E12s don't seem to have that issue that E28s and E34s have when it comes to 16x8 wheels with an offset higher than 20.

I think your rears would actually work, as there's more than 1/4" clearance (about 10mm) between the trailing arms and the tires with a 16x8.5 ET25 wheel in the rear with a 245/45/16. The fender lip is an entirely different and much more depressing story.

Adam Wilson has 16x9 RSs on the back of his M535i. He had to roll his fenders, but he might tell you how much room he has on the inside if you ask him nicely.

Good luck.

Please, check this link - wheel offset calculator

http://www.1010tires.com/wheeloffsetcalculator.asp

According to my knowledge of e12 wheels - I can say the following:
The maximum width of the rim, I've installed for rear is 9.5J without additional flange and ET24 and 10.0J ET 28 with 9 mm flange.
These were standard ALPINA 17" wheels for e34 and e32.

Let us assume that the current rear wheel is 9.5J with 24ET. Then, the calculator shows, that 9.0J with 36ET will has 6 mm less inner clearance (the inside of the wheel to the strut housing) - so, I think, it will not fit for sure, or you must think to use a relatively wide flanges (bad idea).

As for the front wheels - the maximum width, I've installed was 8,5J with ET from 12 to 14.

Let us assume that the current front wheel is 8.5J with 13ET. The calculator shows, that 8.0J with 24ET will has 5 mm less inner clearance - maybe it will not fit also... Or flanges again...

And some words regarding the tires.

You wrote: "Then I could put the RS006s up front to make 16x8" front (225/45/16 tires) and 16x9" rear (245/50/16? tires)"

On the first place - why you choose different diameter for the front and for the rear tires? And the size of the spare tire will be near to the front or near to the rear tire or something in between?

Some data - the front tire height is 58.6 mm, the rear is 65.1 mm.
The roll perimeter for the front is 184.2 mm and for the rear - 204.6 mm !
The difference is almost 11%...

If you look for 225/50/16 front tires and rear 245/45/16 tires - it will be better.

And just another thought - maybe the last one :)
You can use these wheels 16x7 ET11 for front and 16x8 ET24 for rear with the abovementioned tires (225/50/16 front and 245/45/16 rear) without any problem.
