Sunroof Help

Post by jrwilliams »

My electric roof on a '79 no longer closes all of the way. It seems to get stiff as it nears the closed position. I removed the gear in the mechanism underneath the headliner zipper near the windshield and can now slide it back and forth. I would like to remove the roof panel but cannot see how it attaches and cannot see how to remove the headliner piece to get to attachment screws (?). Has anyone a description of the steps to take to remove the panel and trouble shoot my problem(s)? I would greatly appreciate any help as the summer is near and the sliding roof worked great last year and I would like to enjoy it again soon.

Thanks in advance.

Just like it says in the book, open it 4 to 6 inches, then pull down on the sunroof headliner at the front. Yes, it will be stiff, but the clips will come loose. Slide it back and have at things. Getting it hooked back on the pegs at the rear is a little tricky on reinstallation, but doable. Probably not on the first try though.

Sunroof repair information

Post by jrwilliams »

Thanks Mike. I am in need of documentation. I have the factory repair manual but as luck would have it the section on the sliding roof is missing. Does anyone know what the best resource is and how I can obtain a copy?

Thanks in advance.

I should add to the pulling down part, not just stiff, but scary stiff. It almost feels like you're going to break something.

Just a hint of corrosion on a 30+ year old friction fit part makes it very hard to remove. Or at least more than you expect.
