We forgot to mention that if you have two friends with maybe, one & a half 320's that are '77, '78 or '79, you can borrow the intake tubes. They are larger and help the intake breath better. I say one & a half 'cause your car needs six; get it? I say friends 'cause maybe they'll LOAN you the intake tubes so you can stay under the $500 limit. They'er also direct bolt-on. If the big dogs here dispute this, go with them.
If you go with this, number them & install from the firewall toward the radiator 'cause it's a tight fit.
I think there's another snag but, I don't remember what it is.

This is awesome info. Thanks man. we'll definitely look at it. can't wait to get the car and start working on it. all my experiences for bimmers is on the M52 engine in my e39 and previous e36. so this engine is gonna be a new learning experiences. so keep the suggestions coming.

hhhahah, no, our engine is a monster.. so, the diagnal sickles is from the snow melting and trying to run away from the engine and freezing in the process. hhahahha
So, back from vacation and time to really get this car ready to race.
Our first major hurdle is the shifter...there is so much slack that it feels like its in neutral when its in 1st. How easy is it to replace the shifter bushings?
We've also heard that the easiest way to get a short-shifter into the car is to use the shifter from a 2002. Thoughts?
We ran the race a few weeks ago... and... well. Lets just say attempting to race a 35 year old car was a little ambitious.
First day went ok, despite the shifter linkage falling apart and it taking two hours to remove the driveshaft and put it back together. Also, the shifter plate kinda fell apart and required about 10 zip-ties to hold it together so we could almost finish the day.
Second day, 2nd driver in, the Guibo completely disintigrated. Since the driveshaft was no longer held in place at that end and the car was doing full speed down the front straight, it started rotating wildly under the car, driven by the rear wheels. It took out the shifter linkage, the exhaust, the transmission mount, bent the output shaft... pretty crazy.
We were done.
Anyway, we're gonna fix 'er up and race some more!
We've found a replacement for the trans... going to be swapping to the 5-speed instead of the 4-speed. And a new motor comes with it. We'll be searching for coilovers because after the transmission, suspension is the biggest issue.

I don't know about the rules, but, can you run w/o bumpers?? Or, get some rusted out Euro bumpers? Your factory bumpers are alotta dead weight, right?
In the ole daze, we put plain chrome sorta blades on the bumper mounts to pass for bumpers. We sometimes ran the blade all the way across the front & rear as bumpers. They were about 2" or 3" high & 3/8" think. If you use chrome round head bolts with rubber washers, it'll look sorta spiffy. Or, then again, naked?
Of course we ran "slaloms" in large parking lots, too. More informal.

wish i had seen this post before u ran, the guibo thing freaks me out. when i bought mine it did the same thing(not to the end of my tranny but still), would love to do a solid drive shaft. seems like it would be a lot less lost energy.
instead of spending a good bit of money on new springs(shocks might be necessary) why not try some of those spring brace like things u use for a loaded out truck. my dad and i would invert them to pull coils tighter, cant attest to the durability of them for a 7hour endurance race but they are only 7dollars at orileys auto parts here in states, pack of four braces, enough for 2 struts. i would buy a pack for each strut. but it might stiffen up your ride. these cars have loads of travel.
if it lowers the car to much u might be able to wedge a spring spacer in the top. oh and i would invest in some lock-tite for those bolts u crank down on.
also those bumper struts that the aluminum bumper mounts to weigh like 20lbs each if i remember right. finding a lighter alternative in maybe a solid piece of tubing might be a good compromise if ur worried about low speed impacts. would probly hurt a lil more but lighter is better! especially for the nose heavy-ness of our cars.
see if your roll cage people could weld u a steel strut brace for the front and rear. stiffen it up.
also could u post a picture of your exhaust and explain what you decided to go with? and how did your brakes hold up, good?
