Throttle Body Removal

Hey guys

New to the forum, I am in the process of trying to revive my old 530i (drove it a few years back in high school). Back up in my home town for a week right now and my goal is to get this thing running smoothly by the week's end.

Anyways, I've been searching around here for about an hour, but I can't seem to find the answer to this. Is it indeed impossible to remove the throttle body (77 530i, so it includes the heating lines) without first removing the valve cover?

I've just spent about a half hour getting frustrated at this as it seems to be about 2mm short of clearing (thanks to the stupid coolant chamber bumping into the VC).

Before you ask, yes all of the hoses and throttle cable is removed. Only thing holding it in is that d*mn valve cover!!

Any thoughts? I plan to not hook the coolant chamber back up upon reinstallation so I don't have this issue in the future.

Ok, I just went out and had another go at it and by some magic I was able to squeeze it out. Putting it back in might be another story, but if it came out then it'll go back.

Time for some adjustments/cleaning!

Hey Danja, I'm not much of a mechanic, but, I've had the valve cover off, adjusted the valves & used the same gasket to replace the cover. I just left the gasket on where it wanted to stay. No leaks either. If the car hasn't been driven maybe you should do the valve adjustment anyway.
But, then again, I'm not much of a mechanic, seriously.

Need to give a shout out to Peter Florance for writing that throttle body FAQ!!!

Thanks to that, and a bit of my own tweaking, I have already got this thing to go from not idling at all to idling rock solid and no longer dieing upon throttle release!

Now to get the timing..
