Wiper motor/transmission alignment

Post by jrwilliams »

My transmission failed and I took things apart, found the broken part, ordered it (took a long time from Germany) and now trying to hook the arm on the motor. Can anyone describe or have a picture of how things should line up? Seems like there are infinite possibilities. I tried searching the message boards but nothing came up that I could use. I realize now that I should have left the arm attached to the motor and disconnected at the ball joint.

I've been running here in the wet northwest with rainex and am anxious to get the wiper system back in operation.

Thanks in advance.

I did the same thing.

It is not hard to find the right arm location again. I would recommend that you put it all back together, without snugging up the arm nut at first.

Once everything is back in place, reach into the area where the motor lives and loosen the nut, but do not remove it. Hold the arm off the splines such that it is not engaged. Have someone else turn on the wipers inside the car and then off. The motor will go back to its resting position. Now install the arm, with the wipers where you want them.

If you don't have someone who can help, then remove the arm when you activate the wipers. Otherwise you might send the wipers into your hood (don't ask how I know).

It is a little finicky to reach in there, but you can do it.

Check the torque on that nut after a few runs with the wipers on. Mine came loose once. Not a big deal to fix roadside.

Make sense?

I will give it a whirl and hope I don't scratch up my new paint job.

Thanks.

Fixed! The wipers sweep the windshield when the arm that attaches to the motor at just sly of 3 o'clock when looking at it from the front of the car. In other words, the arm is extending the transmission as far away as possible to the drivers side.
