M30B35 build - oil pump questions

Post by Trevor M »

I'm trying to assemble the bottom end and get the pan on. I know I need the E12 oil pan so the engine will fit the car.
But I have a question about the oil pump and pickup tube.
Reading here somewhere it says to bolt the B35 pump body onto the B28 pickup tube. I notice there's a difference in pickup tubes, mainly a pressure relief valve that's missing on the B28 engine oil pump.

^^^This is the M30B28 pump. It doesn't have the relief valve but is the only pickup tube that fits the E12 oilpan I have.

Image

^^^This is the M30B32 pump. It has the relief valve but won't fit the oil pan. The pickup tube is in the right spot but about 15mm too low

^^^This is the M30B35 pump. It's not suitable for my application.

My question is, which pump body do I use, is the B35 oil pump better? Or does it even matter? I would use the B28 pickup tube but what about the pressure relief valve? Is it located in the oil filter canister?
I want to use the B35 upright oil filter canister with this engine but I'm afraid it doesn't have the relief valve I need (I haven't looked).

Another option I've been considering is to run the B32 pickup tube after I cut about 15mm off the bottom. It would still have the screen but the opening would be much larger.

Thanks.

M30B35 build - oil pump questions

I don't have the credentials to give a definitive answer, however, I'm installing an '84 euro non-cat engine (M30B35?) in the '81 e12 with motronic. I used the e12 2.8 pickup tube with the M30 pump (and e12 oil pan). This way I didn't have to move the pump, only the tube.

Thanks Tom,
Just looking to hear back on what worked. My biggest concern is the absent pressure relief valve on the B28 pickup. That coupled with me wanting to use the up-standing B35 style filter canister. Don't know if it will cause me problems down the road.
