I mounted the ECU on the brake booster support. There is quite some space between the firewall and the booster on the old E12. I did not make any protection yet, have been to lazy / occupied with other things lately. Plus, I don't drive the car so much, and the climate is dry here. Wouldn't recommend that location to anybody though.
I believe that the common way is to mount the ecu in the car, behind the glove box. There even is a factory prepared passage through the firewall there, intended for AC I believe. I checked on my car, it seems to be spot-welded closed. I don't know if you have to lengthen the cables, but judging on my harness, you might get away easy, it just might fit.
Idle was fine after I fixed vacuum leaks, but now it started to be shaky. I blame it on an issue with my fuel pressure regulator.
