If your ball joint separator tool is the kind that clamps onto the ball joint, tighten it up good--then if the ball joint doesn't break loose, rap the side of the ball joint with your hammer. Don't be gentle.

fitted the tool tight, tapped the side of the joint, tightened the tool a bit more and pop - off it came
nothing gentle about it that's for sure
