HELP!: trunk lock jammed

Post by braino »

Just got back from a biz trip, threw my computer and other luggage in the trunk and when I got home discovered that the trunk lock is jammed. From what I can tell, it's not coming back out - maybe the spring is too weak?

I sprayed some lock-lubricant into it hoping that it would snap back out but no luck.

Needless to say, I'm up sh*t creek on this - I need my computer for work.

Anyone have this problem before and find a solution? I'm going to go to a shop first thing in the am to try and get the trunk open - if someone sees this and has a solution, please post :)

Thanks,
Brian

If the button won't pop out, spray around it, not in the keyhole. There's an O ring in there that seals it that gets sticky in time. Then stick the key in, turn it part way, say to 11 O'clock, and pull, it should come out. If you really need to break in PM me and we'll go from there.

trunk open - lock destroyed

Post by braino »

Locksmith came. Had to tear off the lock cylinder (who know if he "had to" - he did).

Now I need a whole lock assembly. I'm wondering if this is something that can be ordered from Germany? Or is this something that I have to get from pic-a-part?

Anyone have a decent spare around that I can buy off of them?

I am carless until this is resolved, unfortunately...

Thanks for the help.

It's just sad that you didn't have the time to try Mike's suggestion.
Pik-A-Part would work, but, you'll have to be very lucky!!
Good luck,,,,Greg

I did try his suggestion - but pretty sure one of the wafers was bent. The locksmith and I tried the ginger/careful approach but had to resort to more extreme measures...

yes, unfortunate.

new lock assembly on its way

Post by braino »

Turns out you can buy the whole housing new from BMW. It's on it's way from Germany - should be here in 10 days...

I'll have to have the lock cylinder re-coded for my key but no biggie.

new lock cylinder housing

Post by braino »

Per someone's PM - the cylinder, housing and a new key + expedited shipping from BMW DE was $70. Much less than I was expecting.

Check the locking switch in your door panel. My trunk was locked about a month ago glad I didnt go drilling it out. Turned out the locking rod came off the locking mechanism leaving everything locked. I was able to unlock all my doors however in order for me to unlock my trunk I had to reset the switch so to say.

Sounds like you have everything in order but it might not be a bad idea to check it just to make sure.
