Valve train noise after replacing head gasket

Post by DonT »

I replaced a blown headgasket and had the head inspected and needed valve job. They replace 5 exhaust guides and ground valves also surfaced head .008. After reassembly started engine and it is making loud noises in valve train area, like really loose rocker adjustment. I have adjusted valves (.010) 3 times with no improvement. I rechecked the valve train assembly (visual) and rockers, springs, etc. look to be in proper sequence. Anyone have any ideas on what is wrong?

Update,,,I determined the CAM timing must be off and sure enough it was. I reset the TDC on the cam and the crank and it runs well. no preignition now. Not sure how I got that far off the mark, must have checked TDC 10 times, Live and learn. :D

Have not been through the valve job on a BMW (yet), but on two other cars the valves needed adjustment after running about 100 miles. Maybe you could put on a few miles, then adjust.

FWIW the valves in mine always sound noisier when I adjust them than when my mechanic does.

The interior in my 635 is stripped to basic racing steel. If you want to hear some valve train, engine noise, try that.
