Front Left Brake Caliper

Post by REman »

Been waiting over 3 months for a rebuilt and still not available. Been checking all the websites (and double checking) with no luck yet. Not ready to pay nearly $400 for new one.
So I ordered a rebuild kit and took a chance at my first attempt to rebuild. Was able to air compress 2 of the 4 pistons out but the other 2 are so frozen one will hardly budge and the other barely (after soaking with WD-40 overnight). Vise grips are just chewing them up at this point.

Any ideas I maybe haven't thought of are welcome. Maybe someone has one they can part with?

Thanks

Scroll down to August 25th., read, " Brake caliper seized." Stop with the vice grips, follow the posted instructions, be patient and you are going to win.

Thanks for the heads up T. Turns out was able to finally loosen the the last 2 pistons the second and third day after loading them up with wd-40 and letting them sit overnight x 2.
Rebuild successful so far even though I did chew up the outer portion of the face of the pistons a bit from the vise grips to loosen them but the walls of the pistons still in great shape, lucky. It looked like rust was the main culprit as the boots were still in tact and seals seemed fine too.
Anyway good to have the shark rolling again and on to the next project.

My thanks to Mike W., Lenny, CabbageFumes, our resident gurus with the years of experience to fix anything. In my case of stuck pistons, the wood strip trick.

To all readers, it is true brake fluid is hydroscopic. Fancy word for attracts water, moisture, to rust the inside surfaces of the calipers. Far easier than dealing with stuck pistons, rebuild kits, is buying a bottle of DOT 4 fluid, a pressure pump, and replacing the old yellow stuff with nice and clear.

Once a year, or two. The bad things happen if you can't remember when.
