Hey guys, I have an issue with my e12-based '79 633. My original engine fan has quite a few stress cracks and needs to be replaced - the issue is that I can't figure out how to install the new fan without taking the radiator out - I know it's tight between the fan and radiator, but there has to be a way. The fan and fan clutch are both original with the four bolt setup. This must be a pretty basic job 'cause I can't find any directions at all in our technical FAQ's or on any of the other Bimmer websites I'm aware of. I've replaced fan clutch and water pump on one of my '85 6ers, but it had the single 32mm nut, not the same setup as the '79. Can anybody walk me through this one? Any help appreciated!!

engine fan
When I replaced the water pump on my 77 I had t o remove the shroud and the radiator. It was a good thing anyway cause I got to see that the radiator needed attention and I was able to fix it before it let go on the freeway or something. Think of it as preventive maintenance. And, by the way, I have a replacement waterpump and fan that has the single nut on it if you were looking to have both of your cars the same. Just throwing that out there. Good luck on your project.

One vote the other way, older style bolt through. That front assembly, water pump etc. maybe will need attention once while you own the car. I.e., pull the radiator, flush it, do what needs doing to the front of the engine and that's that.
The big nut type needs a big flat wrench and pulley holder that are not easy to find or cheap.
Do make a sheet of cardboard to place against the radiator for removing. Do make sure the bolt and bushing in the fan are positioned correctly and you feel the bolt, bushing, hub are tight.
Finding it loose after start up is very frustrating.

I've always been able to remove the fan when needed, but it's a very tight fit and I do have skinny fingers. I prefer the old style fan clutch, I think they last longer, but it's much more to purchase new if need be. As far as removing the new type, I just get a 10" crescent in there, it fits.
