Automatic transmission adjustment

Post by Blaise »

I am happy to announce that I just entered the world of E12’s by purchasing a 1977 530i.

Couple of first items that I need to attend to are:

-Free up stuck front right caliper
-Adjust “kick down cable” for automatic transmission

I have ordered a Haynes and a chiltons manual, but will not have them immediately. I want to make the transmission adjustment before I drive the car home.

Does anyone have the spec’s/measurements for this adjustment? Tips?

Thank you kindly.

Welcome to a great website, Blaise.
What Don Daynes did for my '81 automatic was snap off the cable from the male end on top of the intake runners, righty-tighty til it was fairly tight when it's re-connected with everything in a neutral position. This allows it to shift at better intervals, compared to shifting to third almost immediatly after take-off. I'm thinking the male end is connected to the throttle body. While the kick-down cable is seperated you might want to lube the inside of it with a spray lube. Also, go to a p-n-p and gather a coupla connectors, just in case.
Good Luck,,,,Greg

Also, Blaise, don't buy anything from the dealership/stealership. There are a lotta websites with parts. Just ask away. Greg

Thank you Greg

As I did not have the manual, yet, we adjusted it with about 1mm of tension in it. It shifts fine now.

On the other hand, my brakes need some attention.
