Clutch Plate Removel

Post by Lmarkey »

I took out my engine last night. Unbolting the bell housing, jack up the engine a few inches in the front and the trans slide onto a stack of boards and padding all by itself. definitely the way to go! I was only going to get it set up and call a friend to extract the block, but once the trans free was I just kept going.

2 questions. First how do I remove the clutch Plate, do I just unbolt it from behind the fly wheel? Something tells me it may be more involved than that.

Secondly, bolting up my engine to the engine cradle, I think I need a set of 8mil bolt (like the one that held the bell house to the engine) but longer?

Unbolt the pressure plate a half a turn at a time until it's loose, otherwise you may distort it.

I always use 3, 10MM bolts and 1, 8MM bolt when attaching them to an engine stand. 8's would probably hold it, but there's a lot of leverage out there on that long 6 cylinder and you don't want it to go crashing down. Also get it so it's a little top heavy so when you pull the head off it's not too bottom heavy. And be very careful turning it, it's not exactly well balanced.

Basic safety?

Post by RonDwyer »

I have a 3.5 on an engine stand right now and I am not at all sure that it is safe, or that being cantilevered off the back end of the block is safe and secure for it. The chinese engine stands out there at Kragen are absolute junk for anything larger than a 4 cylinder. I still have the front supported with a chain to the hoist to take some stress off the bolts.

As for the clutch plate, it should be obvious how to remove it, take the bolts off. But if you are not sure, get the trusty Haynes manual out and familiarize yourself with what the pieces look like out of the car.

What sort of project are you attempting with all this heavy work? I am over in San Leandro if you want to see one of these in progress. My project is an engine swap to a 3.5

Got the Clutch plate off. But now have trouble with the fly wheel bolts. They don't want come off. I hosed them off with penetrating fluid on the front and as well as I could on the back, but no luck as of yet. We will see tomorrow morning if a night time soak helps. Any other suggestions, heat the fly wheel maybe?
