A coupla days ago I asked if the Pertronic ignition system can be installed in the smaller distributor of the '75. Any knowledge of this? I think I have a larger distributor. Are they interchangeable? Do they rotate the same way? It seems they would.
Also, I'm having the radiator rodded out. plus a new fan clutch. I should prolly change the water pump. What do I say to get the set-up that makes it easier to r&r later? The metal impeller is a must of course.

Just pull your old distributor (rotate engine til rotor aligns w the tdc indicator mark first) and see if the hole is the same size and gear on the end i the same. I don't know for sure, but I would assume they are the same, knowing BMW. The initial transistorization of the ignition system would only have involved parts in the top of the distributor, so they probably wouldn't have changed the interface end at all.

I thought the small distributor ended in the early 70s, back in the Bav days, maybe even only on the 2800. Regardless, either one will plug into the car and work.
If I were you, I'd look for a distributor, control unit and wiring from a E12 528i or 80-81 633/733 and use that. It's a good hot spark and while some have had problems with the 30 year old parts, pretty reliable IMO. Plus it's all factory parts and you can find factory spares. Or get one from a 78-79 633/733 if you want to keep the original vacuum retard only design. Not currently a factor with California smog only on 76 and later, but you never know what they're going to do next.

and it lives on the passenger side fender well in the engine compartment. It's an amplifier for the electronic ignition. It's medium sized, maybe 3X4X1.25" or so. You would need the little wiring that's attached to it, the later type distributor, that control unit and the coil that goes with it. But it's a very hot spark and you would no longer have points and condenser to deal with. It's hot enough I had a problem with one of my spark plug cables one time, the last half inch or so had turned to charcoal and it still ran and fired ok on that cylinder.
