steering box nut loose

Post by Peter Florance »

Holy crap, somehow my steering arm to box nut is loose! Seems impossible for it or the arm to fall off (sub-frame is in the way) but how does this happen?
I've never been able to even pull one of those arms off!

Red Loctite on splines and threads? Impact it back on?

Wow, I've never seen one of them loosen up. Yes, I would use either red or I think it's green, Stud and Bearing mount locktite. I used that stuff on a FWD axle one time with worn splines and had a hell of a time when the CV joint went bad and I had to replace the axle. Sledgehammer time. I first tried with just a bit here and there and it loosened up, next I went with the green, liberally applied as they say. No more problems with that one. Just hope the seal doesn't go.

We fixed it today
Just removed the mounting bolts and pried it up enough to get an impact on it. For some reason the washer wants to move with the nut when it rotates. We just red loctited it and impacted back on and bent the tabs up.
It's a go-kart now!
