5th Gear grind

Post by anthony »

When I go into 5th gear above 60mph and add power the is a vibration actually a grind. Like it is not in gear or wants to "pop out" however it is in gear. No doubt it is a scary sound. Go back to forth no problem no sounds.

Like the other similar post the bolts are loose on-top the the transmission, I tightened them the last time the engine/transmission was out. But I do not believe tightening them would solve this problem.

Like that old "AAMCO" commercial is this a big problem or a little one?

And alternatively, what about 60+ in 4th?

But seriously, just need to determine if it is a 5th gear related occurrence or a speed related one.

4th gear at speed below and above 60 mph not a problem.
5th gear below 60mph no problem. 5th above 60 with power problem.

My flex disc blew yesterday while driving down the highway. Very specific, 4th at 70 mph. I heard a chunk hit the underside of the car. I stayed in 4th reduced speed to 55 with to lessen vibration. I continued to drive I nursed it home. I replace it the disc today and while I was under I tighten that bolt part of the gear linkage.

All my problems are solved. Very smooth and 5th gear is fine.

I realize how lucky I was that I didn't have catastrophic failure. Meaning I would have needed a tow.

great! weird that you had to be in 5th gear to notice the issue before.

Actually, I noticed a lot of vibration i attributed it to other things. Wheels out of balance, u-joints, transmission. For example there was vibration out-of-balance passing thru 58 to 59 mph. I thought it was the tires.

If I had gone under and looked I may have seen deterioration or a loose bolt.

I reminded of "2001 space odyssey" Put back the AE1 unit and wait for failure.

Not a good policy.
