CLANCK , differential noise , next task

I am getting this CLANK noise from rear axel ,when releaseing the clutcn, or letting go the gas pedal and acelerating.
If I lift the rear wheels ang grab the driveshaft near the differential it goes about 1/16 of a turn before engaging the axles. It's the only play I can feel on the drive line
Too much backslash?
How much play is normal?
Anybody has done this job , of getting that ring closer to pinion to reduce that play?
Do I need to lower the differential ,or can it be done removing rear cover?

I'm going to guess that what you say is 1/16 lash is okay.
I'll guess again .....and suspect the diff. pinion gear....

and maybe bet $$ on it (pinion gear)if the car has towed a trailer etc.
