Headliner replacement

Post by thomas_m535i »

The headliner (a 'solid roof' version) in my E12 restoration project certainly could use a replacement. Since this part is NLA at BMW's, I'm looking at alternatives. In Europe hard to find, but it appears that the following US companies should be able to deliver a new headliner:

(1) http://www.headlinerexpress.com/servlet ... 30i/Detail
(2) http://www.worlduph.com/bmw8.htm

Is anyone familiar with either of these two? It's probably handmade and I'm a little worried about whether or not it'll fit correctly. What are your experiences in terms of fit, quality of the fabric, and originality?

Your advice is as always greatly appreciated, thanks!!!

I've been looking at headliners too, though I'm really on the search for carpet. I've asked the Headliner Express folks for a swatch of the "IM10" vinyl. From what I've heard of the World Upholstery one, something isn't correct, though I think it's a sunroof thing. My gut feeling is that they're probably made by the same people. I'll keep you updated.

Can you help me find a Marineblau carpet?!!!! Thanks.

They don't list it on their website, but try Walloth and Nesch. They have a lot of the hard to find parts for older BMWs. http://www.wallothnesch.com

Thanks guys.

Chris: think so too. So might be interesting to just buy a stretch of vinyl yourself (available at BMW's?) and ask an upholsterer to custom make it for you.. Some Germans advise this approach as well. I will indeed also ask W&N if they can help me out.

Let's keep each other posted when we learn more.

By the way, about the carpet: I'm uncertain if a similar material as original can be obtained somewhere. As such, not an optimal solution, but I think your best bet is for now at least a good second-hand.

Update: I've found out that Walloth&Nesch can indeed deliver new and original head liner material for a reasonable price. Width should be 1350mm and it's sold p/meter.
