Accelerator Pedal Sticks

Post by shebuilt »

Hello.

Entertaining a 1978 530i with some small issues. Please help if you can and thank you.

1. Accelerator pedal stays stuck in down position revving car unless physically pulled up will not retract.
2. A/C blows warm

Appreciate opinions and similar experiences with fixes. I am tying to avoid towing car home if accelerator pedal is a simple fix.

Check / lube the bushings #4 in picture on the engine side of the firewall. From there check and lube all of the linkage points to the engine.
Inside where the arm connects to the pedal hole can get crusty too.

Thanks...would this cause it not to return? It stays stuck down and I have to physically pull it back to position.

If it's like the carburetted M30, there is a spring that is also responsible for the pedal return, it is located under the intake runners (drivers side if the wheel is on the left), number 6 in this drawing:

Check if it's there, and mounted correctly. And maybe grease the linkage while you're there. Mine had bush #3 broken as well.

I had a problem with having to manually pull up on the gas pedal. I removed the pivot point on the engine (under the intake manifold) and cleaned and lubricated it. This took care of my problem. See #4 in the attached picture.

The answer to your question is yes!
You physically push down on the accelerator & it gets stuck in that position,
so, you have to respond with equal & opposite pressure.
It, at least, makes sense to me.

I took photos. I see where you guys are correct and I will order those bushings. Can you tell me does it simply pull out and I push the bushings in? Also the cable on top seems to be missing something?

Any thing else anyone sees out of place, please let me know! Thanks guys.

That return spring isn't in the right place. I can't think of where it goes at the moment, but it doesn't go on the pedal itself. Good sharp pictures at least though!

On A/C, your hoses are bad, at least on the high side and perhaps all, and it's out of refrigerant. There may or may not be additional problems, but I'd lay money on the above at least.

the spring should be attached near the steering column / heater valve / brake switch:

Ok guys...I always like to update with solutions in case someone else has the issue.

It was incorrect placement as the guys assisted in this posting and it needs a tension spring and shackle.

Part no. 35-41-1-106-272
35-41-1-102-186

On to the next project!
