Compression questions

Post by TNmtnBoy »

Hello all,
Tested compression during a plug and wire swap on my '79 528i and got around 110-120psi on all cylinders. I was trying to find where this is on the spectrum of tired engines, but couldn't find much. What is the original compression on an m30? Is 110 low enough to consider a rebuild? Also getting some white smoke from the exhaust under acceleration. Head gasket? I haven't owned it long enough to know if I'm down on power or using coolant yet. Advice would be much appreciated.

Sidenote: Is anyone going to The Vintage this weekend? My son and I are taking the E12 aka "Ruby" (Rubinrot Metallic). Would love to connect with any other E12 lovers!

That's low by the numbers, but fairly even is good. I wouldn't put too much stock in it. The white smoke is more troubling, but any chance it was still cold?

Rings typically just don't wear out. They can use a prodigious amount of oil from bad valve guide seals though.
